Speed logs

Combined Docking Log & Echo Sounder SAL T3

SAL T3 combines the speed log features with echo sounding – measuring longitudinal relative speed through water as well as two-axis true speed over ground and water depth down to 250 metres The SAL T-series is the first type-approved combination of speed log and echo sounder in one housing using only one combined transducer. In combination with an external Rate of Turn Gyro a full docking log functionality is achieved.

Electronics Unit – ELC:

The ELC controls the measurements of the system. It contains two independent units, one unit for speed through water and another for depth and speed over ground measuring. Also the depth and the speed over ground systems have full redundancy.

Both measuring functions are based on the acoustic correlation principle. The basic concept is the measurement of the time delay between the characteristics of reflected sonic pattern sensed by the receivers. The time delay from transmission till echo reception is used for depth estimation.

Echo signal modulation is used for speed estimation. The speed is estimated from the fix distance between sensor elements divided by the estimated time delay from correlation, where two signals are compared by shifting one relative to the other in time, and choosing the time shift where the maximum similarity is found.

The speed data calculated in the ELC is sent as serial IEC61162-1 / NMEA messages for further processing in the LPU or directly to any other user.

Log Processing Unit – LPU:

The LPU is mounted on the wheelhouse area and receives the NMEA message from the ELC. The LPU has various options to perform message conversion and calculations and has also variety of inputs for receiving data from other units. Various outputs are available for external users, such as autopilot, radar, AIS, VDR, fin stabilizers etc.

Transducer – TRU:

The combined transducer is mounted in a sea valve arrangement suitable both for single and double bottom designs. The transducer incorporates as standard a 30 metres cable for connection to the ELC. By means of separate crystals, both relative water speed and true speed over ground and water depth are measured. The crystals work both as transmitters and receivers.

Serial Digital Indicators – SD1/SD2:

The SD1/SD2 series of indicators gives a flexible solution to the presentation of longitudinal and transverse speed and distance measurement.

Echo Sounder Display – ESD:

The ESD gives a comprehensive graphic overview of the echo sounder presentations.

JRC JLN-550 Doppler Sonar

The JLN-550 Doppler Sonar is designed to provide ship speed information with higher stability in the dual frequency modes; one using a lower ultrasonic frequency that is adequate to measure the ship’s speed against the ground up to larger depths and the other using a higher ultrasonic frequency that allows the ship’s speed against the water to be measured even in water with tiny bubbles. The transducer is designed for dual-frequency transmission, but its size is smaller than the conventional models.

  • Ship speed measurement is insensible to bubbles generated in high-speed navigation, ensuring stable speed display.
  • The transducer is substantially downsized, allowing it to be installed on the bow side that is little affected by bubbles.
  • An underwater-mateable connector is adopted for the transducer, so that a transducer can be
replaced at a quay even in case of its failure.
  • The equipment is provided with an additional function of indicating the ship’s fore and aft speeds and port and starboard speeds by entering GPS information.
  • The ship’s port and starboard speeds at its arbitrary position can be indicated by entering ROT information.
  • An optimal Doppler sonar system can be configured by combining a variety of options.
  • On-line maintenance (option) allows any failure to be detected during navigation.

Speed Log Consilium SAL R1a

SAL R1a is the fourth generation acoustic correlation SAL speed log for measuring relative speed – speed through the water. The log is designed to meet requirements as specified by authorities and shipowners. Its performance exceeds the various IMO specifications and has proven reliability in many thousand installations worldwide.

Main features of the SAL R1a log:

  • Acoustic correlation technology.
  • Easy set-up and calibration procedures from the bridge SD4 indicator.
  • Flexible calibration allows very accurate reading over the speed range.
  • Small size bottom arrangement – transducer diameter 32 mm – for easy installation.
  • Bottom arrangements are fully compatible with previous models of SAL Imcor and SAL R1.
  • A number of various bottom part adapters enables retrofit, exchange of existing systems, even on ships afloat.

The basic version of SAL R1a includes bottom arrangements – alternatively with or without sea valve, transducer, electronics unit all mounted in the bow area and SD-indicators as selected installed in the bridge area.

The unit provides serial output signal according to IEC 61162-1 (NMEA 0183) as well as 200 pulses per NM and analogue voltage output.

The electronics are mounted on a circuit board enclosed in a splash proof steel box. Cable glands are provided in the bottom plate of the box. Bottom arrangements are available for both single and double bottom hull constructions including sea valve for easy access and maintenance, and if necessary, exchange of transducer from inside without dry-docking.
