Gyro compasses

A gyrocompass finds true north by using an (electrically powered) fast-spinning wheel and friction forces in order to exploit the rotation of the Earth. Gyrocompasses have two main advantages over magnetic compasses:

  • they find true north, i.e., the direction of Earth’s rotational axis, as opposed to magnetic north,
  • they are far less susceptible to external magnetic fields, e.g. those created by ferrous metal in a ship’s hull.

All ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards shall have a gyro compass, or other means, to determine and display their heading by shipborne nonmagnetic means and to transmit heading information for other navigation equipment.

Gyrocompass PGM-C-009

Gyrocompass PGM-C-009 is designed to meet the most needs of the modern marine market. Highly accurate performance, small size, short settling time make it suitable for any type of vessel.

Gyrocompass provides the following data:

  • heading against the geographical meridian at the vessel speed up to 90 knots, latitude up to 80°, roll and pitch angles up to 50°;
  • rate of turn;
  • information about operation mode and failures.

Gyrocompass PGM-C-009 complies with requirements of IMO A.424(XI), A.821 (19), MEC 945-96, ISO 8728-1987.

CONFIGURATION:

Gyrocompass has a monoblock design. The compass casing is made of a foamed polyurethane and has a window on the top for the compass card. If necessary, built-in Control Unit may be mounted remotely, at the distance up to 100 meters away from gyrocompass.

The heart of the gyrocompass is a dynamically-tuned gyroscope – a very accurate sensor that ensures a follow-up speed up to 200°/сек.

FEATURES:

  • efficient one box design
  • small size and versatility
  • automatic start-up and alignment against the meridian
  • short initial settling time
  • fast settling with the preset heading
  • high reliability
  • high static and dynamic accuracy (latitude and speed compensation, automatic compensation of temperature drifts)
  • easy installation and adjustment, built-in testing
  • simple maintenance (no compass fluid, extra cooling and heating are not required, no periodic determination and compensation of azimuth drift, simplified methods of horizontal drift determination and compensation)
  • adjustment of scale illumination brightness
  • ecological safety

MERIDIAN SURVEYOR Gyrocompass

The new Meridian Surveyor boasts a wide range of interfaces to enable use on any marine vessel. The unit utilises a DTG gyro element which provides exceptional performance with an accuracy unmatched by even the latest fibre optic designs.

Unlike conventional spinning mass gyrocompasses, the Meridian Surveyor uses a dry tuned element (DTG) that removes the need for routine maintenance thereby significantly reducing cost of ownership. Hence the Meridian Surveyor provides reliable, maintenance free operation with a MTBF in excess of 30,000 hrs. Calibration is likely to be the only required expenditure during this period unlike the large element replacement costs associated with most gyrocompasses.

Gyrocompass Meridian Surveyor complies with the requirements of IMO A 424(XI), IMO A 821 (1bv9), BS EN 60945, BS EN ISO 8728.1994, BS 6217. 1981 CE Marking, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive and the Marine Equipment Directive 96/98/EC.

Yokogawa CMZ900

  • A modular design saves the space. Master compass can be integrated in the autopilot steering stand.
  • Dual-unit model for extra reliability.
  • Manual and automatic speed error correction.
  • External heading sensor can back up the heading outputs.
  • Heading deviation monitoring.
  • Steering mode input inhibits the unusual operation of Master compass and secure the current heading information during auto-steering mode.
  • Serial data output IEC 61162-2 (high-speed transmission).
  • A unique anti-vibration mechanism enhanced by the velocity damping effect of high viscous oil, provides superior damping of vibration and decoupling of shock at sea.
  • A small and lightweight container enhances the follow up speed. The gyrocompass reading changes smoothly and does not lag when a small ship rapidly changes course.
  • Easy maintenance and long maintenance periods
  • Titanium capsule and electrodes are employed at lower hemisphere of Gyrosphere. Purity is maintained inside of the container, and maintenance interval is then longer-dated.
  • The container is divided into two pieces at bottom when overhauled. Ship’s crew can replace Gyrosphere in case of emergency.
