A list of critical equipment has been developed in collaboration with the Kola State Research Center.
The LNG carrier, whose preliminary design was developed in late 2025, is planned to be built using the facilities of the Severnaya Verf Shipyard and the Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex. This was announced by Andrey Zaytsev, Deputy Director of the Department of Regional Industrial Policy at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, at the International Scientific and Practical Conference “The Far East and the Arctic: Sustainable Development,” as reported by PortNews.
According to him, to implement the project to build a high-ice-class LNG carrier, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, together with the Kola State Research Center, have compiled a list of critical technologies “that must be mastered and put into production.” Specifically, a membrane system for storing and transporting LNG has already been developed and accredited by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping as part of this project.
“We plan for the new LNG carriers to be built by the Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex and the Severnaya Verf Shipyard, which is currently undergoing modernization.” “We are exploring opportunities for building cooperation with colleagues from friendly countries,” said Andrey Zaytsev.
According to him, the Far East is becoming a center for large-capacity shipbuilding for the Arctic.
“We view Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex, where the lead nuclear icebreaker, Lider, is being built, as the primary manufacturer of large-capacity vessels for the Northern Sea Route. To date, the company has delivered five Aframax tankers to customers, an Arc-6 ice-class shuttle tanker, and, in December of last year, the lead Arc-7 ice-class gas carrier. Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex’s capacity currently allows it to produce three to four large-capacity vessels per year, and after the second phase is completed, this figure is planned to increase to 10-12 vessels. Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex’s current order book stands at 26 vessels,” said Andrey Zaytsev.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade also plans to develop new shipbuilding capacities in the Far East. “The design for the new shipyard in Promezhutochnaya Bay is still being developed. I hope that my colleagues from USC and I will be able to complete the preliminary preparations and begin implementation soon,” he said.
