Shipping company MSC became the first in the world with a fleet of 900 units

MSC’s operating fleet comprises 609 owned vessels and 291 time chartered vessels.

Swiss liner shipping company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has become the first international container carrier to operate a fleet of 900 vessels, Container News reported, citing research by Alphaliner.
MSC recently took delivery of the LNG-powered container ship MSC Germany (Maxi-Neo-Panamax size) with a capacity of 16,000 TEU. This is the fifth vessel in a series of twelve similar vessels, the construction of which was ordered from the Chinese shipyard Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in October 2022.
According to Alphaliner, MSC’s operating fleet includes 609 owned vessels and 291 vessels taken on time charter. The company’s total container capacity currently reaches approximately 6.47 million TEU, which is almost 1 million TEU slots more than its closest competitor, the Danish company Maersk Line. MSC has every opportunity to increase its container fleet to 1,000 ships within a few years. This is taking into account that the Swiss company has confirmed orders for the construction of 132 container ships. When calculating the fleet, Alphaliner took into account ships under conditional ownership, for example, those taken on long-term bareboat charter with obligations to subsequently purchase, provided that these ships are managed by MSC’s own structures.
