French company plans to build a large container ship powered entirely by wind sails

The vessel is scheduled to be launched in 2027.

Grain de Sail Group (France) has announced plans to build its third cargo ship, Grain de Sail III, with a wind sail system. The ship will be able to carry about 200 TEU and cross the Atlantic in 13 days, the company’s press service reported.
The launch of the container ship is scheduled for 2027.
Vessel specifications: overall length – 109.7 m, total sail surface area – 4 thousand square meters, maximum draft – 62.5 m, carrying capacity – 2.8 thousand tons (200 TEU), crew – 10 people.
The container ship is planned to be ordered as part of the company’s implementation of a policy on carbon-free maritime logistics.
Grain de Sail Group, which has been involved in coffee roasting and chocolate production since 2013, has since 2020 become the owner of a small fleet of very low-carbon (at least 90%) sailing cargo ships. These ships, registered with the International French Registry (RIF), transport French exports to New York (USA), organic cocoa and green coffee imported from Latin America, and other raw materials.
