China has occupied two thirds of the global shipbuilding market

China’s shipbuilders outstripped Japan and South Korea in terms of orders
China controls 65% of the world’s shipbuilding orders, according to data from Intermodal and Clarksons Research. China’s order book for merchant ships has grown 2.7 times since 2020.
During the same period, the combined share of the global shipbuilding market of Japan and South Korea fell from 78% to 31%.
By November 2024, China’s order portfolio included 3,256 vessels with a total cargo capacity of 224 million deadweight tons. This represents an increase of 37% compared to 2023 and 72% compared to 2022, which is significantly ahead of the 21% growth in the global order portfolio in 2023.
